iPhone SDK From Apple in February 2008Third party software programs on the iPhone were supposed to cause network problems, viruses and other nefarious issues.  Since the introduction of the first hacks for the iPhone, Apple has been playing a cat and mouse game when trying to control what users can install on their iPhone.  Yesterday, then was a big change in Apple’s stance on the 3rd party software development.

There are some good news and some potentially bad news coming out of this announcement from Apple.  The good news is that there will finally be software available from different kinds of developers.  I’m hoping for SlingMedia software to watch the SlingBox with.  These programs will also work with the iPod touch as well.

Apple has said that Nokia’s usage of “digital signature” for the third party software is good for them so they can qualify programs and there would be authorized for use on the iPhone.  This may also mean that there may not be free authorized software from the iPhone.  Apple has gone more the way of fee based services for the iPhone as other developers have as well.  In any event, approved third party software for the iPhone could end up creating the as of yet “killer app.”  Via Engadgetmobile.
