22 iPhone Tips and Tricks Part 1iPhone users are very familiar with the controls of the software, however there are quite a few people in the world that have not yet had a chance to use one.  This is the first part in a three part series that should help new and somewhat experienced iPhone users.  The first set of tips will cover the iPod controls.

Even users of the 8GB iPhone have problems with storage space.  The space issue can be a big problem when there are several full length movies synced.  Typically a movie can take up 1GB of memory.  There is a way to get more space however.  There is an option to delete a movie once viewed via a pop-up button.

The iPhone iPod software shares a playback speed option as the fourth-gen iPod has that allows audiobooks to be played faster or slower.  Tap on the Settings button and then on the iPod option.  Then tap on the Audiobook Speed entry and, in the following screen, select Slower, Faster, or Normal.  There are other iPod features that appear on the iPhone.  The Settings screen has the options to turn on Sound Check (optimizes the volume between tracks) and to select any of 22 included equalization presets.

There is a way to change the first four buttons at the bottom of the iPod screen which are Playlists, Artists, Songs, Videos, and More.  The first four can be changed in the same manner as the commands that appear on the iPod’s main screen.  To access these options tap on the More icon, and then tap on the Edit button in the upper left corner of the following screen.  The Configure screen will appear with icons for Albums, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Genres, Composers, Compilations, Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.  The icons that appear at the bottom of the iPod screen can be changed by tapping and holding on the icon that is preferred and drag it over to the icon that should be replaced.  Then tap on Done when finished.

When using a Bluetooth headset, call that arrive in get routed automatically.  This does not happen when using Visual Voicemail.  There is an Audio button on the Visual Voicemail screen that lets the user specify how to listen to a voicemail message: via the built-in speaker, the handset, or a Bluetooth headset.

Most iPhone users know of how to scroll through the contacts list via two methods.  The first is by flick scrolling with the users finger, or tap on one of the letters in the alphabet running down the right side of the screen to bring up contacts beginning with that letter.  There is one more way to view contacts by holding a finger on the alphabetical list, while sliding up and down.  This way contacts will scroll in a more controlled manner than by just flicking a finger.

With an iPod, users can store files as well as music and videos.  The iPhone can do this with the help of a Mac and a $10 USD utility.  It is called iPhoneDrive and it is from Ecamm Network.  It allows people to view files on the iPhone in a Finder-like screen.  Users are allowed to copy files to and from an iPhone via drag and drop with some simple buttons or the program’s File menu.

There currently is no way to sync notes from the iPhone with any program on the Mac.  To synchronize notes to and from the iPhone create a fake contact and paste the notes in the notes field of the contact.  This can be done on the Mac via Address Book.

There are many ways to get driving directions on the iPhone.  The Maps software offers a bookmarking icon. Bookmark a home address to make getting directions that much faster.  This one tip helps many people to get driving directions much faster than entering a home on the start or finish address field every time.

The favorites and Recents show frequently called numbers and a list of numbers for people called recently.  In addition it shows calls that have been missed.  If those recent numbers are mobile phone numbers an SMS message can be sent by tapping on the right angle bracket icon next to the contact name or number.  Then tap on the Text Message button at the bottom of the contact window.

The last tip today is equally great in that it allows a completely crashed iPhone to be rebooted.  Most cell phones have a very small reset hole to accomplish this.  The iPhone has a few buttons but no reset hole.  However, it can be reset by pressing and holding both the Home and sleep/wake buttons.  In about ten seconds the Apple logo will appear, rebooting the iPhone.
